Thornton and Sokoloff* showed that traditional lectures, HW, and recitations do not do well in helping students build a good mental model of instantaneous velocity as measured by the graph-reading problem.
Error rates are ~ 50% after traditional instruction.
Four hours of interactive microcomputer-based labs (MBL) suffice to reduce the error rates to less than 10%.
