Student A: Tried to make sense of the material, and integrate it with her intuitions. She didn't like "theory" by which she means
- "...it means formulas...let's use this formula because it has the right variable, instead of saying, OK, we want to know how fast the ball goes in this direction... I'd rather know why for real.”
Student B: Felt she "understood" the material from the lectures or reading. For her, the physics was just the set of formulas and facts based on the authority of the instructor and text. Consistency or sense-making had little relevance for her.
- "I look at all those formulas, say I have velocity, time, and acceleration, and I need to find distance, so maybe I would use a formula that would have those four things."
