Lecture: Monday and Wednesday 4:00 - 5:15PM, Room Z1219
Office Hours: My office hours will be on Tuesday and Wednesday 11:00- noon. If these hours are inconvenient, you may try to see me any other time in my office.
Homework: The homework assignments (problem sets) will be assigned on Mondays, and should be handed in at the beginning of class the following Monday. Late homework will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor, but not after solutions have been handed out.
Exams: There will be 2 exams given during the lecture periods (1:15 hours in length). Both exams will contribute to the final grade for the course. The final exam will be given on Monday December 16 from 4PM to 6 PM. It will cover all the semester's work. You must take the final exam to pass the course.
Grade: The semester grade will be based on the homework,
in-class exams
and the final exam with the following tentative
weights:
2 in-class exams: 40%
homework: 30%
final exam: 30%
First Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, Sept. 16 )

Second Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, Sept. 23 )
Starting from Maxwell's equations, show that the B field satisfies
the wave equation.
Problems 3.13, 3.27, 3.34, 4.11 and 4.19 in Hecht
3rd Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, Sept. 30 )
Problems 4.18, 4.31, 4.38, 4.40 and 5.4 in Hecht.
4th Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, October 7 )
Problems 5.6, 5.23, 5.26, 5.38, and 5.71 in Hecht.
First Term Exam - Monday October 14
This exam will cover the material in chapters 1-6 in Hecht. You may bring
one 8.5" x 11" sheet with formulas to the exam. You may write on both
sides of the sheet.
5th Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, October 28 )
Problems 6.6, 6.11, 6.18, 7.6, and 7.27 in Hecht.
6th Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, November 4 )
Problems 8.5, 8.10, 8.16, 8.20, and 8.28 in Hecht.
7th Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, November 11 )
Problems 9.4, 9.8, 9.13, 9.33, and 9.37 in Hecht. For problem 9.37, include
more detail than is given in the solution in Hecht.
8th Homework Assignment: (Due Monday, November 18 )
Problems 10.1, 10.3, 10.7, 10.25, and 10.34 in Hecht. For problem 10.1, include
more detail than is given in the solution in Hecht.
Second Term Exam - Monday November 25
This exam will cover the material in chapters 7-10 in Hecht. You may bring
one 8.5" x 11" sheet with formulas to the exam. You may write on both
sides of the sheet.
