Course outline: This is the second semester of a two semester
course in introductory physics.
The subjects to be covered are electricity and magnetism, optics and atomic
and nuclear
physics. This is a non-calculus course, but it does make extensive use
of algebra,
trigonometry and geometry.
Homework: Homework will normally be assigned at each Mondays
lecture and will be due at the following
week’s Tuesday discussion section. See the syllabus for details of the
due dates.
Please staple the pages together and put your name, section number ,
and the assignment number on the first page. Late homework will not be
accepted except in the
case of illness verified by a doctor’s note. Your lowest two homework grades
will be dropped.
Solutions will be posted in the glass case outside room 1412. The assignments
can also be
found in http://www.nscp.umd.edu/~hadley/p122/HomeworkF99.html
Labs:
The laboratory experiments are an important part of this course.
All ten experiments and all ten lab reports must be completed in order
for you to pass the course.
Please come to the labs prepared.
Exam Dates: Test 1: October 6 from 7:00-8:15PM.
Test 2: November 22 from 7:00-8:15PM
Final Exam: December 20 from 7:00-9:00PM.
All tests and exams will be held in the usual classroom,
Phys. 0405. You are required to take the final exam and both tests.
Extra Help: Free coaching for Physics 122 is available
from the experienced volunteers in the Slawsky Clinic from:
10-11 MWF, 12-1 Tu, Th, and 2-3 Monday through Friday in room Phys. 1208/1214.
You may also visit the Slawsky clinic at other times. Please feel free
to contact either the TA
or myself and ask questions.
Grading: Your semester grade will be based on the following percentages:
Tests 25%
Quizzes (best 8) 10%
Homework (best 8) 10%
Laboratories 25%
Final Exam 30%
Disability Support Service: If you have a documented
disability and wish to discuss academic accommodations, please contact
me as soon as possible.
Tips For Doing well: Do the homework problems, ask questions
in lecture and recitation, seek help quickly if you do not understand the
material. Remember that you are responsible for the material discussed
in class, including demonstrations, even if it does not appear in the textbook.
