Electric and Magnetic Elastic Structure Functions
of the Deuteron
Elastic scattering from the deuteron can be described by two structure funcions
A(Q2) and B(Q2), which in turn contain information on the deuteron's charge
(GC) and quadrupole (GQ), and magnetic (GM) form factors, respectively. A set
of experiments in Hall A
at CEBAF
will extend the measurement of A(Q2) to about Q2 = 6 (GeV/c)**2 and improve
significantly the existing SLAC data on B(Q2) around its diffraction
minimum, and extend the measurement to the highest possible momentum transfer.
For Q2 < 1.5 (GeV/c)**2, the standard configuration of the
Hall A spectrometers
will be used. Determination of B(Q2) above Q2 ~ 1.5 (GeV/c)**2
requires a 180 degree spectrometer system constructed from surplus
magnets. The lower momentum transfer measurements are likely to be part
of the early experimental program in
Hall A.
It should be noted that in
oeder to separate GC and GQ using tensor polarization, a more accurate
determination of A(Q2) is required than currently exists.
